Note:
[1] Librarian at the Western Michigan University for 24 years, Frank Allen was an eminent and enthusiastic ex libris amateur and collector and the author of two excellent books on Charles R. Capon and William Fowler Hopson. I had the privilege of meeting him and his wife in Lisbon, on the occasion of the XVIth International Ex Libris Congress of FISAE, in 1976. A guest speaker at the Congress, Frank Allen delivered a very interesting and erudit paper on «The Golden Age of American Bookplate Design (1890-1925)»,(in «A Arte do Ex Libris», # 79, Oporto, 1976, translated into Portuguese by J. V. de Bragança). That memorable conference attended by a full Hall had the merit of shortening the gap between North American and European Bookplate lovers. In the words of his widow, Ruth Allen, «his enthusiasm for ex libris was tremendously spurred by his encounter with european bookplate designers and collectors...» (in «American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers' Bookplate in the News», Alhambra, California, # 36, (April 1979), pp. 285).
His readiness to share knowledge and his generosity in offering and exchanging bookplates and making known American artists was unequalled and can never be forgotten. The basis of the author's collection of North American bookplates was a generous gift of Frank Allen. That is why we dedicate this page to his Memory.
