A major ex-libris revival in Bulgaria

It is a real delight for ex-libris enthusiasts to see that interest in bookplates in Bulgaria, after having been dormant for many years (with the exception of a few artists), has suddenly burgeoned and is flowering.

As the old 'Exlibris Sektion Bulgaria', the new Association of Ex-libris Friends in Bulgaria (AEFB) has close links with the National Library of Saints Cyril and Method in Sofia. It integrates all earlier members of the Exlibris Sektion Bulgaria and keeps as its address the National Library, 88 Levski Boulevard, 1504 - Sofia (the name of the Street has been changed from the earlier one).

The AEFB, whose Secretary is Mr. Armand Basmadjian, seems to be shaping up as an ex-libris club with artists, researchers and collectors as members, mainly from Bulgaria but also from abroad, with a journal which will be bilingual Bulgarian / English.

The first issue of the journal should be available next month, and will contain a column by Prof. Dr. Axinia Dzurova (art critic), as well a presentation by Armand Basmadjian of the earliest Bulgarian bookplates. There will also be articles by other art critics and artists, and a presentation of important contemporary artists in Bulgaria, such as Peter Velikov, Robert Baramov, Dimo Kolibarov, Valeri Vasilev, Tzvetan Kazandjiev, Marin Gruev, Nikolay Yanakiev, Hristo Kerin and many others.

Also the older generation which have been created and set standards for ex-libris will be introduced in future issues. To launch the journal and arouse public interest in bookplates, there will be a 'national' exhibition of ex-libris only by Bulgarian artists in the Exhibition Hall of the Building of the Union of Bulgarian Artists in Sofia in May.

The second novelty is the creation of an International Exlibris Centre in Sofia, which is also based on membership and of which the AEFB is the first institutional member. Its Chairman is Mr. L. Nikolov, a well-known patron of the arts, artist and art collector, and the Deputy Chairman is Mr. Onnik Karanfiljan, a reputed graphic artist and author of ex-libris.

The IEC will have a different function than the AEFB, essentially linked to the organisation every two years, in Sofia, of an Ex-libris Biennial. The first such event organised by IEC, the Union of Bulgarian Artists and the National Library, will be opened on May 24th 2003 in the exhibition Hall of the National Library. Its international jury will meet in February 2003.

The rules for participation in the Biennial will be published in the AEFB Journal next month and will be sent to all FISAE member associations. The IEC address is International Exlibris Center, 1 Jerusalem str., 1784 - Sofia, Bulgaria, and the fax number is +359 2 975 33 72.

Readers who are used to e-mail communication will be pleased to know that the IEC has its own e-address: mailto:iecsofia@anons.bg, at which Mr Basmadjian of AEFB can also be reached and Mr. Karanfiljan's mail address is "Onnik Karanfiljan" mailto:onnik@btc.net. Both speak and write excellent English!

All our best wishes accompany both these new institutions and their directors!

Benoît Junod
